Why IAF air crashes? An article by Bally Chohan

Bally Chohan has come to know that almost half of the air crashes that took place in past five years were due to human errors and had no technical snag.

Bally Chohan was reading an article published in a leading English news daily of India. As per the newspaper report Indian Air Force has reported a total of seventy four air crashes during the period of six years from 2004 to 2010. Most of the mishaps i.e. almost forty two percent were due to technical faults. Only six percent of the accidents were due to bird-hit.

Following is the details of IAF air crashes between 2004 and 2006:
- Total Air IAF crashes between 2004 – 2006 - 74
- IAF air crashes due to human errors - 33
- IAF air crashes due to bird hit - 4
- IAF air crashes due to technical snag - 31
- Reason not known - 6

Committee appointed by Indian Air Force in its report submitted to the Parliament of India mentioned that there is huge shortage of trainer aircrafts. Moreover Indian Air Force asked for more obsolescence of simulators for its pilot trainees. This was cited as one of the main reason for these accidents.

The committee was headed by Satpal Maharaj, Congress Member of Parliament. In his report submitted to Parliament Satpal Maharaj recommended acquiring of new trainer aircrafts and simulators with latest technology. Satpal Maharaj noted that this will result in providing best available training to upcoming pilots and also will be able to save many precious lives.
